Network Reachability Flags
You might have taken a look at the Network Connection tutorial of this handbook, which looks at the SystemConfiguration's network reachability flags, and returns wether we're connected to the Internet or not. However, the reachability status is only called once, and isn't updated when the connection switches to offline.
In this section, we'll be going another route. We'll use Network along with NWPathMonitor to create a monitor that updates any time the network connection status changes.
Create the monitor
Create a new file called Network and import Foundation and Network.
// Network.swift
import Foundation
import Network
Within Network.swift, create a Network class that conforms to the ObservableObject protocol.
// Network.swift
class Network: ObservableObject {
}
Add three variables within this class.
// Network.swift
let monitor = NWPathMonitor()
let queue = DispatchQueue(label: "Monitor")
@Published private(set) var connected: Bool = false
- A monitor, which is an **initialized **NWPathMonitor.
- A queue, which will run the monitor.
- A published variable called connected, which is a boolean variable that's updated every time the network connection state changes.
Next, we'll create a function called checkConnection. Inside of it, we'll call the pathUpdateHandler, which sends us updates when the network connection changes. Then, we'll also starting the monitor, so that we'll automatically be notified if there are changes in the connection.
// Network.swift
func checkConnection() {
monitor.pathUpdateHandler = { path in
if path.status == .satisfied {
self.connected = true
} else {
self.connected = false
}
}
monitor.start(queue: queue)
}
Connect to the view
In ContentView, we'll initialize our network as a StateObject.
// ContentView.swift
@StateObject var network = Network()
In the body, we can just display a simple text that lets us know if we're connected to the Internet or not.
var body: some View {
Text("We're \(network.connected ? "connected" : "not connected") to the Internet.")
.bold()
}
Test your code
Finally, the fun part: to test out our code! Please note that if you're testing on the Simulator, the results won't be perfect: sometimes, the state isn't instantly updated - it's best to test on an actual device connected to your Mac.
If we're connected to the Internet, you should see this on your phone:
And if we're offline, you should see this:
