What's TypeScript?

With TypeScript, any value or any variable that you type in your application must have a type. For example, if you create an age variable, it should be of type number, since the values you assign to it can only be numbers. You can read more about TypeScript in this TypeScript for the New Programmer article. You can also learn more on how to use TypeScript in your React components in the second section of this two-part React TypeScript series.

TypeScript with Create React App

With Create React App, it's pretty easy to create an app based on TypeScript. You simply need to run the following command in the terminal, which uses the TypeScript template, and everything will already be setup for you!

npx create-react-app my-app --template typescript

TypeScript with Gatsby

With Gatsby, it's a little bit different. Create your Gatsby project by following the Gatsby and React section of this handbook. Then, navigate to your gatsby-config.js file and add the gatsby-typescript-plugin in your plugins array:

// gatsby-config.js

plugins: [
    `gatsby-plugin-typescript`,
    // More plugins...
],

Then, install the plugin through the terminal:

npm i gatsby-plugin-typescript

Also install TypeScript for the development environment, again through the terminal:

npm i typescript --save-dev

Then, install the basic TypeScript definitions packages. They are packages that contain all the type definitions of the React library core.

npm i --save-dev @types/react @types/react-dom @types/node

Finally, change all your components and pages files to .tsx or .ts extensions. Please note that all gatsby-*.js files currently do not support TypeScript, so leave them as .js files.

And you're good to go! You can now code with React Typescript in your Gatsby project

TypeScript with NextJS

With NextJS, after you created your NextJS React application, create a new file called tsconfig.js in your root folder. You can create it manually or, from the terminal, run the following command. Make sure that you're inside of your project folder before running the command. This file takes care of the TypeScript configuration for you.

touch tsconfig.json

From the terminal, install the type definition packages.

npm install --save-dev typescript @types/react @types/node

Rename everything in your pages folder with an .tsx extension. If you see the error Cannot use JSX unless the '--jsx' flag is provided.ts, it's normal. Move on to the next step.

Run next dev to start your server. Your tsconfig.json file should automatically be populated and the error should be gone. A new file, next-env.d.ts, wil also automatically be created. It's important to not touch these files as they are auto-generated and it can mess up the configuration if you do.

And you're ready to use Typescript in your NextJS project!
