Reach Router

Reach Router is a library based on React Router and lets us easily create a navigation in our application. It allows us to link one page to different paths and components. For example, we can create a Courses component and link it to the /courses path of our website.

Install the package

In the Terminal, install the package by running the following command:

npm install @reach/router

Create a few pages

Create a few components that will be the pages you'll add to your router.

// Home.js

import React from "react";

const Home = () => {
  return (
    <div>
      <h1>Home page</h1>
    </div>
  );
};

export default Home;
// Courses.js

import React from "react";

const Courses = () => {
  return (
    <div>
      <h1>Courses page</h1>
    </div>
  );
};

export default Courses;

Create your Router

In App.js, import Router from Reach Router and the pages you just created.

// App.js

import { Router } from "@reach/router";

import Home from "./Home";
import Courses from "./Courses";

Wrap the body of your App component with a Router. This lets React know this is a navigation with different routes. Inside of the Router, add your components. For each component, provide a path attribute, that'll let Reach Router know the URL linked to that page.

// App.js

const App = () => {
  return (
    <Router>
      <Home path="/" />
      <Courses path="/courses" />
    </Router>
  );
};

For example, to access the Home page, the user needs to go to the path /, which is the root of my website. To access the courses page, they need to go to the /courses path.

Link

Reach Router also comes with Link, which allows us to easily navigate from one view to another. Import it at the top of the Home.js file.

// Home.js

import { Link } from "@reach/router";

In your Home component, add a Link. When the user clicks on the Link, it'll lead them to the courses page, since we added /courses in the to attribute.

// Home.js

<Link to="/courses">Go to courses</Link>

You can do the same for the courses page, and add a Link to the Home page.

// Courses.js

<Link to="/">Go to Home</Link>

Not found page

To create a not found page, create your NotFound component first.

// NotFound.js

import React from "react";

const NotFound = () => {
  return (
    <div>
      <h1>Sorry, page not found</h1>

      <Link to="/">Go to Home</Link>
    </div>
  );
};

export default NotFound;

In App.js, import the NotFound component.

// App.js

import NotFound from "./NotFound";

Inside of the router, add the NotFound component with a default attribute, meaning that by default, if React can't find the component, it'll show the NotFound page.

// App.js

<NotFound default />

Going further

In this tutorial, we learned how to create a simple navigation in a React application using a router. Still using a router, we can easily create a custom URL with a unique ID. For example, if you create a shopping website, you might want a unique URL for each product in your store. This can be done with URL params. You can learn more about it in the URL Params tutorial.
