Breakpoints
Breakpoints allow you to define specific ranges of screen widths and apply different styles or layout rules to elements within those ranges. For example, you can set a breakpoint at 768 pixels and specify that certain elements should have a different font size or positioning when the screen width is below that value.
There are three main breakpoints in Framer: 1200, 810, and 390. These breakpoints represent the screen widths at which the design layout will change to accommodate different screen sizes.
- Desktop: 1200 is typically used for large desktop screens. At this width, the design may utilize a wider layout and display more content or larger elements. Elements may be spaced out more and font sizes may be increased for improved readability.
- Tablet: 810 is commonly used for tablets or smaller desktop screens. At this width, the design may adapt to a more compact layout, with elements being rearranged or stacked vertically. Font sizes may be reduced to fit the smaller screen size, and the spacing between elements may also be adjusted.
- Mobile: 390, is typically used for mobile devices. At this width, the design may change significantly to optimize the user experience on smaller screens. Elements may be stacked vertically, and the layout may be simplified to avoid clutter. Font sizes may be further reduced, and the spacing between elements may be increased for better touch interaction.
By defining breakpoints in Framer, designers can ensure that their designs are responsive and visually appealing across a range of screen sizes. These breakpoints allow for the flexibility needed to create user-friendly interfaces that adapt to different devices and screen orientations.
Create Breakpoints
- Go to the Breakpoint [+] and Add for 810 and 390 respectively.
- At this point, you will notice that the UI breaks in Tablet and Mobile. We'll fix them one by one.
- Tip: always do your main changes in the Desktop version. It will automatically update to Mobile versions unless there are overrides in place.
Adaptive Font Sizes
For Tablet and Mobile, it's good practice to reduce the font sizes for titles to better use the space available.
- Set the Title to size 44 for Mobile. You will see that below 810, it will switch to the Phone breakpoint.
Create Adaptive Section
Proper organization of layout and elements is crucial, especially as your vertical layout grows with multiple sections. Separate stacked and floating elements using layout features and absolute positioning. Finally, group all elements within a section in a frame and ensure the content fits appropriately.
- Select UI, Stack and Background and put inside a Frame (Cmd + Enter) called Hero. Set the Height to Fit Content. This will automatically convert it to a Stack.
- Set the Background to Position 0 on all sides and Type to Absolute.
- Set the Hero padding to Top 140, Right 100, Bottom 140, Left 100 and Gap to 40.
- Select the Lines and set the Contraints Center.
- To avoid confusion in selection, lock the Background (Cmd + L).
Position Absolute and Z-Index
- Since Position Absolute makes elements float on top of the Stack elements, you can set the Z-Index to 0 to ensure that it's behind the main content.
Overrides
When making changes to other resolutions other than the main, such as Tablet and Mobile, it will create overrides that only apply to those resolutions.
- Set the Tablet Hero to Padding 40 Left and Right.
- Set the Mobile Hero to Padding 20 Left and Right.
- You can see the overrides in blue in the inspector.
Fill Screen and Max Width
One of the most efficient technique is to set your element to Fill with a Max Width. This will make sure it'll work properly on all screen sizes without setting overrides.
- Select the Stack and set the Width to Fill.
- Select the Container inside Navigation Menu and set the Width to Fill and Max Width to 768. Also, add Padding 8 to Left and Right in Mobile.
Min Max
Framer supports min and max values for CSS properties, ensuring consistent size and position across different screen sizes. These values are additional rules that override other Layout growth such as Fill Content.
- Select the UI and set the Max Width 1100.
Tip: add the px (1100px) to quickly switch between units. - Set the Min Width to 390.
- Select the Search and set to Width Fill, Max Width 300.
- Select the Search Text and set to Width Fill.
- Select the Frame next to the Segmented Control and set to Visible No in Mobile.
- Move the Progress Ring, Main Card and Score to make them visible and not cut off.
Visible and Hidden
You can make some elements visible in Desktop and hidden in Tablet / Mobile.
- Select the UI's third column content and set to Visible No.
- Select the Navigation Menu's Left Menu and set to Visible No.
Page Fit Content
To ensure that the entire Desktop height accommodates the addition of new Sections, it is crucial to set the height of the Desktop to Fit Content.
- Set the Desktop height to Fit Content.
